The Wilkes Honors College of Florida Atlantic University (FAU) invites applications for a full-time (9-month) Instructor position in the Biological Sciences beginning Fall 2023. The position has the potential for both renewal and promotion. The successful candidate will teach introductory and advanced undergraduate courses and labs. Faculty at the WHC are encouraged to develop interdisciplinary courses with a co-instructor from a different field of study. Candidates who can teach upper-level electives in areas including cell biology, genetics, evolution, or course-based-undergraduate research experiences (CURES) are especially encouraged to apply. Candidates may also have the opportunity to develop upper-level electives based on their area of expertise. Average teaching load is 7-8 courses per year. The successful candidate will also advise students and direct honors theses. The Wilkes Honors College, which opened in 1999, is a highly selective liberal arts college within a state university, located on FAU’s MacArthur Campus in the coastal town of Jupiter, Florida. The campus is an international hub for scientific research, and is host to the world-renowned research institutes: Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience and the Herbert Wertheim UF Scripps Institute for Biomedical Innovation & Technology, along with FAU’s Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute. In addition, FAU’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute is located in nearby Fort Pierce.
The WHC’s four-year curriculum is centered on the traditional disciplines in the liberal arts and sciences, with an emphasis on critical thinking, independent study, community-based internships, and cross-disciplinary programs. Currently, the WHC enrolls approximately 600 honors students and has 45 full-time honors faculty members. Minimum Qualifications:
Required qualifications include a Ph.D. in any area of the Biological Sciences. Preferred qualifications include evidence of excellence in undergraduate teaching, an ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff and community members as well as a demonstrated skill in understanding of cultural differences. The committee will view favorably the potential for collaboration in the interdisciplinary teaching activities of the college, experience in advising and mentoring undergraduate students, and a commitment to fostering diversity on the campus.
