Assistant/Associate Professor of Microbial Physiology


Position: Assistant/Associate Professor, Tenure-track. 

Location: Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 14853-5701. The academic home for this position is the Department of Microbiology in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.


Position description:

The Department of Microbiology at Cornell University ( invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level of Microbial Physiology. We seek an individual who will establish an innovative, high-profile research program that addresses key concepts and questions in contemporary microbial physiology. The candidate’s research program should address important questions in areas such as, but not limited to, microbial growth and metabolism, inter-species interactions, phage defense, antimicrobial resistance, and other processes that facilitate cell survival and growth in diverse environments.  The ideal program will leverage investigations of microbial physiology to develop a mechanistic understanding of microbial biology relevant to diverse environments, stress conditions, microbe-microbe interactions, or microbe-host interactions.


The appointed faculty member will be expected to establish an independent, externally funded, and internationally recognized research program. The candidate will also participate in undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentoring, advising, and college and university service roles. Teaching may be in general microbiology, bacterial physiology, or microbial diversity, with the candidate developing new and innovative course work. We are especially interested in candidates who will interact widely and embrace a culture of collaboration within and across departments. The position will have 50% teaching and 50% research responsibilities on a 9-month academic year appointment.



A Ph.D. in Microbiology or related discipline is required. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of excellence in research in microbial physiology or a related field, a strong interest in collaboration, and dedication to teaching. Post-doctoral experience, previous teaching experience, and service efforts that demonstrate dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion are highly desirable.
