Assistant Professor (Continuing Track) – Department of Biological Sciences
The Department of Biological Sciences (www.bio.udel.edu) at the University of Delaware (UD) invites applications for an assistant professor-level (continuing track) position in Biology, (https://sites.udel.edu/ctcaucus/why-do-you-want-to-be-a-ct-faculty-at-ud/) starting August 16, 2024. This position offers a strong, supportive setting for a teaching-intensive role in the environment of an active research department, with strengths in the molecular and cellular mechanisms of human diseases, developmental disorders and microbiology. The ideal candidate will have experience in teaching introductory to advanced biology classes to biology majors and non-majors with an emphasis on the core concepts in molecular and cellular biology. Additional expertise in developmental biology, immunology and/or organismal physiology is desirable. Successful applicants will share our vision for being a department that is nationally recognized for high-impact research and teaching, and demonstrate experience or interest in education research and informed pedagogy. QUALIFICATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Candidates must have a doctoral or equivalent degree in biology or a related field, prior to appointment, a demonstration of teaching interest and excellence, and a commitment to teaching and to serving a diverse population. The ideal candidate will have experience as an instructor of record teaching the key concepts in molecular and cellular biology to biology (and other life science) majors, at the introductory to advanced levels. Additional expertise in developmental biology, immunology and/or organismal physiology with experience in teaching some or more of these concepts to upper-level students is preferred. Training and/or experience in discipline-based education research/scholarship of teaching and learning is desirable, but not necessary. Demonstrable commitment to mentoring and promoting a diverse student population is highly desirable.
The Continuing Track (CT) is UD’s full-time, continuing faculty line, similar to the tenure track. CT positions can focus on research and/or teaching; however, this position specifically has a focus on excellence in teaching. CT faculty enjoy contracts that increase in length over time and, like tenure-track faculty, receive full and generous benefits, including family-friendly benefits, as part of their compensation package. CT faculty with terminal degrees hold professorial rank and have a path to promotion up to full professor; CT faculty without terminal degrees are at the instructor rank and have a parallel path to promotion. All CT faculty earn sabbaticals, have opportunities to pursue research/scholarship, participate in shared governance, and hold academic leadership positions.
Primary responsibilities of this teaching-intensive position include teaching introductory to advanced courses, development of curriculum, coordination of lectures with associated laboratory sections, and administrative tasks. Typical workload over Fall and Spring is teaching several course sections per semester. Faculty are also expected to contribute to departmental committees that support department functions and academic programs, and to participate in contributions to departmental teaching and research workshops, retreats, seminars, etc. The position may additionally involve College and University service, discipline-based education research and advisement responsibilities. The successful candidate is primarily expected to excel at teaching and mentoring students who are broadly diverse in regards to race, ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation.
BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES AT UD: The Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Delaware (www.bio.udel.edu) is within the College of Arts and Sciences. Founded in 1947, faculty in Biology have world class research and educational programs spanning a wide-variety of areas, with strengths in the molecular and cellular mechanisms of human diseases, developmental disorders and microbiology. UD Biology strives for an inclusive and equitable culture and has ambitious plans to continue growing the faculty, teaching and research space. The Department has outstanding facilities and support, including a vibrant collaborative research and teaching community, and consists of 33 faculty, a large undergraduate program with about 900 undergraduate biology majors, 200 minors, and a robust graduate program with about 100 graduate students in the MS/PhD programs. Undergraduates have opportunities to participate in peer-mentoring programs for courses, as well as in research experiences in laboratories, and are mentored by graduate students and faculty. The University offers a highly interactive multidisciplinary scientific and educational environment with the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTAL) and support from UD Academic Technology Services (ATS).
