Fellowships
Sanger Excellence Fellowship
The Wellcome Sanger Institute, in partnership with Wellcome Connecting Science, is launching a new three-year Fellowship aimed at people from Black heritage backgrounds. This new Fellowship is designed to attract research excellence and will provide the Fellows with training, mentorship and support to drive their careers forward and to support a more diverse pipeline of future talent.
This Fellowship is aimed at early career researchers and the general requirements are an undergraduate degree and PhD awarded from institutions from within the UK, the Republic of Ireland, Isle of Man and the Channel Islands (the common travel area).
The Fellows will be a part of the Postdoctoral Fellowship programme and will be paid in line with this pay scale (£33,272 – £41,709 in 2022), dependent on skills and experience. The Sanger Excellence Fellowship also includes research consumables of up to £18,000 per annum, dependent on the nature of the project and a budget of £1,500 per annum for the Fellow to attend conferences and training.

BWF Postdoctoral Enrichment Program
The Burroughs Wellcome Fund launched the Diversity in Science program in 2012 to advance the careers of underrepresented minority postdoctoral fellows by enhancing the postdoctoral training and experience of underrepresented minority junior scientists. The Postdoctoral Enrichment Program (PDEP) provides a total of $60,000 over three years to support the career development activities for underrepresented minority postdoctoral fellows in a degree-granting institution (an institution includes its affiliated graduate and medical schools, hospitals and research institutions) in the United States or Canada whose training and professional development are guided by mentors committed to helping them advance to stellar careers in biomedical or medical research.

Rising Stars Symposium
Apply today for the Sanford Burnham Prebys Rising Stars Symposium (April 27- 29, 2022)!
This event will showcase the biomedical research of exceptional scholars, including:
- Late-stage doctoral students who are less than two years from completing their Ph.D. program
- Early-stage postdoctoral scholars who are no more than two years post-degree
Travel, lodging and meals will be paid for by Sanford Burnham Prebys. Selected scholars will be invited to:
- Present research in an oral format
- Network with other students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty
- Attend a reception to celebrate diversity and science
- Participate in a professional development session
- Tour laboratories and core facilities
- Meet with faculty to learn about available postdoctoral opportunities at our Institute
