Assistant Professor of Biology (2022)
Position Description
The Department of Biology at Washington and Lee University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Biology, beginning July 1, 2023. Candidates should be prepared to teach a 200-level course in Genetics, a Microbiology course, with lab, and additional upper division courses. Inclusion of students in research is also a central value of our teacher-scholar model. Our new faculty member will have the opportunity to participate in our interdisciplinary programs (Data Science, Environmental Studies, Neuroscience) depending on their interests.
The school calendar consists of two 12-week terms, one in the fall and one in the winter, and a 4-week spring term. The teaching load is 5.5 courses per year, with the half course most often taught every other year in our unique spring term. There is no summer teaching. Support for research includes laboratory start-up funding, conference funding, summer research funding, and pre-tenure leave, as well as opportunities to present to faculty cohorts and programs on campus; teaching support is available through university-wide workshops, a faculty mentoring program, and the Harte Center for Teaching and Learning.

Qualifications
Preferred candidates will hold a Ph.D. or have ABD status in a biology-related field and will be able to teach Genetics and Microbiology with labs as well as upper division courses in their area of expertise.
The university requires employees to become fully vaccinated for COVID-19, with one booster. New employees must provide proof of at least their first shot prior to the first day of employment. Individuals may seek a medical or a religious exemption to the vaccination requirement.
