Ayana Scott-Elliston BS, MS
Ayana researches systems microbiology, which delves into the interconnections between microbial communities and their environment. Specifically, Ayana studies the microbial community within the gastrointestinal tract. Since gastrointestinal function is tightly linked to multiple body systems such as the HPA (hypothalamus, pituitary, and adrenal) axis, the environment includes both the gastrointestinal tract and tangentially extends to the entire body. Research is focused on the role of the gut microbiome and its metabolites on growth, development, stress response, and immune function in wood frogs. Additionally, Ayana translates research into K-12 education, studying at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in the Department of Zoology School for Biological Sciences with Professor Robin Warne.
